What a way to get Duchy 3s competitive season underway, than with a home fixture against Duchy 2s!
Seemingly an impossible task for the 3s to overcome a team with vastly more experiance than themselves, competing in a division in which they should be competing for the title, the 3s showed great organisation, grit and Duchy class, frustrating the 2s who tried and failed to unpick the lock held by the 3s, until they finally broke the deadlock and took the lead, 0-1 into half time.
A slight switch in player positioning gave the 3s a little more roaming space on their left flank, but with a renewed vigour and enterprise the 2s found themselves threatening much more, having pushed their midfield much higher up the pitch thus pegging the 3s back for large quantities of the second half, but still we (3s) held our shape as best we could as wave after wave of attack came our way. Five second half goals made the match look like a stroll in the park on paper, but it was far from it.
A man of the match performance by Warren Pearce was voted for after umpteen first class saves, including a "best of 3" penalty flick stop. Special mentions going to Jodi Skelton and Ben Pascoe for being rock solid in the center of defence. And congratulations to Neil Pellow-Firth on his competitive debut working tirelessly down our right flank, good show mate!
On a personal note; I feel a great pride in being made the captain of the 3s for this season. i have a limited knowledge of the game and lack many skill-sets attributed to hockey, but i do have plenty of guts, determination and heart which, added to the continual improvement of the first factors mentioned, i hope to become a cog in the gears of a well drilled, competitive and highly enjoyable 3s season
see you next week chaps
