Shootout Victory for Duchy A

Duchy A needed a penalty shootout to reach the Cornwall Plate Final after a late equaliser from Truro B.

The South West Div. 1 champions were well below par for much of the match, lacking the intensity which had been integral to their league sucess and allowing Truro - who were defeated 6-0 and 4-0 in the earlier meetings between the teams - to remain in contention throughout. 

After a goal-less first half, Chris Pound gave Duchy a 1-0 lead mid-way into the second period with a well rehersed penalty corner, however with time running out Truro hit Duchy on the counter and Simon German finished excellently on the reverse to take the tie to penalties.

Having toiled throughout the match, Duchy excelled in the shootout. Max Chippett fired home the first stroke and Kevin Welsh then saved brilliantly in reply to give Duchy an imediate advantage, before Rick Searle's spectacular effort was followed by a tame Truro shot which Welsh again saved to put Duchy 2-0 ahead. Duchy captain, Stu Richardson stepped up and cooly converted the third stroke for the home side and - knowing a miss would send them out - Truro put their third effort high over the crossbar to hand Duchy the win and a place in the final for the second year running.

Man of the Match was awarded to Kevin Welsh.
