Tourists Claim Win in Pre-Season Opener

Tourning side, Newbury & Thatcham, ran out 2-1 winners in an entertaining and good natured friendly against Duchy at Truro School, and saw two evenly matched teams play some good hockey from front to back.

The first half was evenly contested but it was the visitors who had the better of the chances and if it hadn’t been for the outstanding Ethan Allen in goal, Newbury would have gone into the second half a couple of goals up. Martin Crump had Duchy’s best first half chance which produced a fantastic save from the away keeper.

Going into the second half the visitors took advantage of Duchy’s disorganised start and struck early from a short corner and then open play.  At this point Duchy clicked into gear and really started to put the pressure on. Stu Barbary reacted brilliantly to put the ball into the net however the goal was disallowed after the ball into the circle from Max Chippett was correctly ruled to be dangerous. Ben Flint and Tom Blewett dominated midfield as Duchy pinned Newbury into  their own half resulting in Flint smashing one off the cross bar.  Duchy pressure paid off as Lee Selby tapped in from short distance after Neil Bradford saw his shot saved.   Duchy were by far the better team in the closing minutes but unfortunately couldn’t find the equalizer.

Player of the Match awarded to Ethan Allen, for his fine performance in goal.
